Dear
Wine Lover,
I
couldn't say this better myself. Here is an excerpt from the Sonoma
County Winegrape Commission website:
"Old Vine Zinfandel is a Sonoma County treasure. The slants
and slopes of angled mountainsides--where artistically twisted, arthritic-looking,
gnarly vines were planted by pioneers fifty, eighty, and even more
than 100 years ago--are now home to vines that stingily offer up
fruit that is transmogrified into wines that are concentrated, intense,
and identifiable."
And guess what I have here for $5.99? Old Vine Zinfandel from
Sonoma County, and it is incredible how accurate the definition
is for this Mateo 2007 Zinfandel.
Funny thing is, the winery rep that brought this wine almost
forgot to taste me on it...as he was leaving I said, "What
about that wine?" "Oh, yeah, I guess so," he replied.
When I raised the glass to my nose, I knew instantly that they were
old vines and then when the taste confirmed the bouquet, I asked
for every drop he had. His face was in total shock...because he
almost missed the sale.
