January 1974 Selection of Imported Wine

ADRIATICA SAUVIGNON - FRUSKA GORA 1967

Our readers and wine of the month participants have commented that the varieties we have introduced from other countries have been compatible with the "American Taste." The background to this is the number of wines we have tur¬ned down. One out of ten tested, qualifies for our approval. This month's is an example of this search.

Yugoslavia generally produces better white wines than red. We bring you a white wine from the Sauvignon grape, grown in the Fruska-Gora region, near the Danube river. A stretch of hills along the right bank of the river offers the colder climate for ideal conditions to mature the grape and develop the flavor and bouquet.

It is full bodied, medium dry, with a good nose and typical Sauvignon after taste. Serve well chilled with fowl, fish or light veal dishes. The year is right for its age, and it is a buy at $2.49 per fifth.

January 1974 Selection of California Wine

PAR DUCCI - PETITE SIRAH 1969

The shortages experienced in some of the California Varietals have steered the disciples of Bachus to lesser known grapes and the wines from them. The Petite Sirah grape is one of these. Last February we featured the Petite Sirah from Concannon, which led us to discover the Petite Sirah from Parducci Wine Cellars in Ukiah. (Mendocino County) This 1969 vintage of Petite Sirah is another good ex¬ample of this varietal. We liked it and thought you should have another opportunity to sample Petite Sirah and bec¬ome familiar with its dry taste, pleasant bouquet, and med¬ium body. It has a rich dark color, and the character¬istic flavor resembling burgundy type wines, yet different enough to be interesting.

Serve with red meat, game, and sharp cheese -Delightful $3.50 per fifth.
