February 1974 Selection of California Wine

BERINGER FUME' BLANC - 1971 ESTATE BOTTLED

In 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer founded the Ber¬inger/Los Hermanos Vineyards, St. Helena, California. They are Napa Valley's oldest continuously operating win¬ery and world famous for aging their wines in California's most extensive limestone caves.

For the past four years Winemaster Myron Nightingale has been quietly moving Beringer Wines to greatness. We have noticed Beringer winning several large, competitive tastings.

Their Fume' Blanc is a generous white wine made of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal. Like its French cousin, of the Poilly and Sancerre in the Upper Loire Valley, it is vigor¬ous, with a fruity, earthy aroma. Fume' Blanc has sudd¬enly become a new and "big" California Wine. It is well-balanced and quite dry.

We selected this wine in a blind tasting over a higher priced Napa, competitor. A great wine. Serve chilled with white meats, cheeses, or alone. $2.99 per fifth.

February Selection 1974 of Imported Wine

BARBERA D'ASTI - 1967 (BERSANO)

Made 100% from the Barbera wine variety, here is the answer to those lusty souls who want a "fat", full-bodied, full-flavored wine to accompany their rich stews, barbe¬cues, spicier foods, certainly all saucier Italian dishes -and most definitely those great soft cheeses! Like all Ber¬sano wines, this good wine comes from Northern Italy's Piedmont District, recognized as the country's finest table-wine region. Bersano recommends a serving temperature of about 65 degrees.

In July of 1972, we offered another Italian Barbera - Cascina Tranquillo as our wine of the month. It was a younger (1970) wine from another vineyard. For those of you who were subscribers to our wine of the month program at that time, you will be able to detect age in the D'ASTI we bring you now. You might enjoy trying the California Barbera wines against this Italian.

Salut.

$3.49 per fifth.
