September 1974 Selection of California Wine

CHARDONNAY - CHATEAU MONTELENA 1972

A recently activated winery, originally established in 1882, Chateau Montelena has produced its second wine - And what a pleasant surprise! This Chardonnay 1972 shows a correct color, a full and typical varietal nose, which makes you want to linger before you taste it, and a noble bouquet of Chardonnay. Acid and sweetness are in perfect balance and the body is round and full, with a clean and fresh finish. Alcohol is 13.2%. A real achievement in the Chardonnays. Congratulations to the Montelena people. Availability on this wine was limited. We were able to reserve enough for our Wine of the Month partici¬pants, and thus bring it to you. (Chateau Montelenas first release was a 1972 Auslese Johanisberg Reisling and was equally an excellent wine, but we were unable to procure enough to go around. We have some limited quantities for those of you that are interested.) Serve at cellar temperature. $6.00 //fifth

September 1974 Selection of Imported Wine

CHILEAN BURGUNDY - Non Vintage - BON SOL

Our selections in import, wines are designed to educate and to discover. A recent discovery of our wine evaluation panel was this remarkable generic Burgundy from Chile. A rich, full bodied, burgundy style wine with a good bouquet and smooth flavor. The slight bitter finish is not objectionable; in fact it compliments the overall general quality. Notice the color, it adds to its enjoy¬ment. We are not saying this is a great wine, but for the price it is a good wine, and a good example of how other countries are coming up with very pleasant acceptable wines that please our tastes. Serve at room temperature as a table wine with red meat dishes. $2.29 / fifth
