December 1974 Selection of California Wine

CREAM SHERRY - BEAULIEU VINEYARDS

California makes good wines and can make them quite inexpensively. One just has to learn how to shop and evaluate wines for their value. To prove this maxim we bring you this month a superlative cream sherry with a price tag that beats comparison for a quality product.

The history of Beaulieu Vineyards dates back to 1900 when Georges de Latour founded the winery. Now owned by Heublein Inc., this winery has consistently been a leader in the California wine scene. Well known for their varietals and generics, the dessert wines of Beaulieu also excel. A good example is their cream sherry.

The wine has a gold amber color, a nose that is pleasant and deep, and a bouquet that is balanced for sweetness and nutty sherry flavor. Silky in texture, the sherry has a hint of orange flavor in its finish. Delightful for that winter evening in front of the fire. A Merry Christmas to all our readers. $2.00/fifth

December 1974 Selection of Imported Wine

L'ANGLOIS CHATEAU - SAUMUR BLANC DE BLANC

For your New Year's toast we bring you a French spark¬ling wine not made in the champagne region. The Saumur dis¬trict is in the Loire Valley. The grape predominantly is the "Pinot de la Loire" from the Chenin vine. The soil is a limestone and is apparent in the final product.

The classical methode champenoise is used to prepare this sparkling wine. Sixteenth century caves from an old quarry are used to age the wine at a constant 50° F. The Langlois family has operated Chateau since 1885.

The wine has correct color, full nose with depth, full body and excellent sparkle, dry and pleasant to the palate, with an acid finish.

Toast in the New Year with this sensibly priced elegant French sparkling wine, well matching the champagnes of Rheims & Epernay.

Happy New Year

$4.99/fifth

A quick two days in St. Helena, sandwiched between a so called rest (how can you rest in the wine country, when there is so much to see, learn, and taste) we discovered Stonegate Winery and Stags Leap Wine Cellars. Very excellent wines. The latter wines have arrived. We offer:

-Johannisberg Reisling - Napa Valley - 1973 $4.75
-Johannisberg Reisling - Mendocino County - 1973 $5.00
-Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley - 1972 $5.50

(Stonegate is still not available in the southern California area. It is presently in the San Francisco area in a few fine wine shops. We will be the first and one of few wine shops with Stonegate wines in this part of the state)
