August 1977 Selection of California Wine
ROSE OF CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1975
THE FIRESTONE VINEYARD
With the coming of what looks to be a hot summer, this month's domestic selection would be the perfect compliment to any meal on a warm evening.
Firestone is located just north of Santa Barbara in the Santa Ynez Valley which is gaining a reputation of its own for producing premium varietals. The winery is operated by Brooks and Kate Firestone, of the well known industrial family. Their 300 acres produce some very crisp and clean wines of which this Rose is no exception. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, the wine has a deeper color than you would normally find in a Rose. The nose has a definite Cabernet character and much more complexity than you will find in others. The taste is full and dry. Try it with shrimp salad, chicken amandine or any light beef dishes.
August 1977 Selection of Imported Wine
ENTRE DEUX MERS 1975
One of the largest and major divisions of the Bordeaux region, Entre-Deux-Mers is situated between two rivers, from whence it gets it name, the Gironde and the Dordogne. Until recently the region produced primarily sweet wines, but faced with declining demand the growers made an intelligent decision to make dryer wines and have succeeded in producing one of the best values in white wines today.
Our selection from Barriere exhibits a light straw color and delicate aroma similar to a dry Semillion. The taste however is completely different, offering a very crisp, clean quality with just a hint of earthiness that is found in most wines from the Bordeaux region. Some complexity has developed in the nose and taste.
Here is a pleasant wine at a very pleasant price to enjoy during a light lunch or dinner; with a midnight snack of cheese and crackers.
Here are this months finds. Every wine offered is personally tasted and evaluated by our wine managers for value versus quality. These prices are net prices.
BLANCHARD ROSE D'ANJOU 1976
A slightly different Rose in that it is sweet yet with a touch of dryness!? Served chilled on a warm summer afternoon, or with a picnic lunch, or an evening at the Hollywood Bowl. It will be delightful.

We selected a Wednesday night, 24 August, to accommodate the three guest experts. This event should be a sellout - reserve early, if interested.
Burgundies and Pinot Noirs will be featured at our September event, to be held on Friday, September 30. Dick Elwood, winemaker and owner of Llords and Elwood, will be our guest expert. Five of the top California Pinot Noirs, including the Llords and Elwood Anniversary release, will be compared against five Burgundies, including Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin-Clos de Beze, and Echezeaux.
The Manhattan Beach Chapter has the leadership for our October event. This will be a comparison of the '71 vs '75 German Reislings, wines running the spectrum from Kabinets to a Beerenauslese. This Seminar is currently scheduled for Friday, 28 October.
Following shortly after the Reisling event in October, we have scheduled Dick Peterson, owner of Monterey Vineyards, to lead us in a Seminar on "The Unique Varietal Characteristics of Monterey County Wines". This event is scheduled on Friday, November 11, to allow it to coincide with harvest time. We will have fresh varietal grapes from Monterey County to compare with many of the wines served.
