January 1978 Selection of California Wine

CHARDONNAY 1975 SONOMA VINEYARDS

One of the objectives we have in the Cellarmaster Wine of the Month Program, is to bring our subscribers finds in value. (Variety, education and development of tasting expertise being some of the others) The escalating prices of Chardonnay during the last three years has driven many of the good Chardonnay's out of our offering commitment of under $10.00 for 2 bottles of wine.

Rodney Strong, winemaker at Sonoma has come up with a winner for price and quality. He has blended grapes from various growing regions to produce this delightful vintage. We are impressed.

This chardonnay is golden yellow, fruity and typically varietal nose, medium body with a good balance of acid and sugar. Wood is apparent but not overpowering. All in all a charming Chardonnay for the price. Will develop if laid down for 2-3 years. Try it with broiled fish dishes.

January 1978 Selection of Imported Wine

RIED PFARRWEINGARTEN ST. LAURENT 1974

The St. Laurent grape, a member of the Pinot Noir family, was brought to Austria from Burgundy by the Cistercian monks who considered it one of the most outstanding red grape varieties and who believed it would grow well in Eastern Austria.

The Pfarrweingarten vineyard located near the famous wine village of Oggau on the Neusiedler sea, has excellent climatic and soil conditions. The St. Laurent grape planted here, is cultivated and vinified according to the century old traditions by the Cistercian monks. The Monastery at Heiligen Kreuz is renowned for the quality of its wines, particularly the St. Laurent.

The wine is ruby red, with a fruity nose and taste. It has a velvety texture with a pleasant acid-fruit finish. We found it very engaging. Try it with ham.

PINOT NOIR-N.V.
Winemaker notes: This red wine results from the discovery by Hacienda's enolog­ist and its winemaker that the product of a Napa mountain vine­yard and a Mendocino valley vineyard seemed to complement each other in an unusual and complete manner. The highland wine is from the Mayacamas Mountains which separate Sonoma and Napa Valleys. The lowland wine is from the Redwood Valley vineyards of Charles Barra. $3.75/fifth $40.50/case

CHARDONNAY OF SONOMA -
Clair de Lune. Winemaker notes: This rich, aromatic Chardonnay was produced solely from grapes grown in the Buena Vista Vine­yards at Sonoma. 1976 was a dry year, producing a light crop of exceptional grapes. After crushing and overnight skin con­tact, the must measured 22.4° Brix and 0.90% by volume total acid. Fermentation at 55°F lasted 5 weeks. Aging in Eur­opean barrels provides a sub­tle complement of oak to the varietal character of this wine. $6.75/fifth $72.90/case

ZINFANDEL 1975.
Gold medal winner. Winemakers notes: This wine is produced entire­ly from Zinfandel grapes grown on several carefully selected Dry Creek Valley vineyards, a region long noted for famous Zinfandel wines. The grapes were harvested during October 1975 at an average sugar con­tent of 23.2° and a total acidity of 0.76. After fer­mentation on the skins, the wine was pressed and under­went malolactic fermentation. It was then aged in American and French oak barrels. $4.50/fifth $48.60/case

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1975
Sonoma County. Winemakers notes: This is our third vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Like most of the great Bordeaux wines of France, it is a blend of grape varieties. Ours is about 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot. The Merlot grapes were harvested on September 23 and 24, 1975 with a sugar con­tent of 23.7° Brix and a total acidity of 0.79. The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested in late October 1975 at 22.6° Brix and a total acidity of 0.65. The varieties were fermented sep­arately and blended together after malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged in bar­rels of French and American origin. $6.75/fifth $72.90/case

GREAT CHARDONNAYS FROM CALIFORNIA AND FRANCE

First Two Events of 1978

The Chardonnays of California will be featured on Friday, January 20, at the Holiday Inn in Torrance in our first 1978 Seminar. These outstanding Chardonnays will include the current releases of Hanzell, Spring Mountain, Freemark Abbey, Sterling, and Heitz. This is the annual Chardonnay event of the Manhattan Beach Chapter. Contact "Van" Van der Stucken, phone (213) 370-2823 for additional information or to insure that you are on his mailing list.

The great French Chablis will be featured at our February Seminar. This event is second in our three-part series on the Great Chardonnays of Burgundy. Currently-available Chablis Grand Cru's will be featured, along with the best of the Premier Cru's, an outstanding regional Chablis, a Burgundian Chardonnay, Rene LaLou Blanc de Blanc Champagne made from Chardonnay grapes, and one or two California Chardonnays to accentuate the similarity and differences of these two great Chardonnay growing regions. The Speaker for this event will be Bern C. Raney, vice president of Chateau Wine Company, long-time student of Chablis wines. This remarkable tasting will be held on Friday, February 28, at the Holiday Inn in Torrance, and will be hosted by the Palos Verdes Chapter, Director, Al Hausrath. Announcements for this event will be included with this Store bulletin in the February mailing. Watch for it in your mail box or on the counter at the Store on or after February 1.
