June 1978 Selection of California Wine
HACIENDA WINE CELLARS ZINFANDEL 1976
Hacienda Wine Cellars are situated in the western foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, in the southern end of Sonoma County. In 1940 Frank Bartholomew bought the old Haraszthy Buena Vista estate, which he subsequently resold to Young's Market Company of Los Angeles. He did however, retain 450 acres, some of which he is developing for Haciends Wine Cellars. He also created a new winery with tile roof and outdoor balconies in the early Spanish architectural style.
The Zinfandel grape is of unknown origin and today is found only in California. It is believed to have been brought here originally in the 1850's by Agoston Haraszthy, who planted it in the same vineyards where it is grown today by Hacienda.
The winery produces its reds with extra color and tanin to develop flavor complexities. This Zinfandel is a good example of the complex type of wines which Hacienda produces. It has an expansive bouquet, deep color, and a rich full body with lots of fruitiness. Try it at room temperature with red meats, spicy dishes, or other hearty entrees.

June 1978 Selection of Imported Wine
CORVO SALAPARUTA WHITE 1975
This wine comes to us from the island of Sicily off the southern tip of Italy. The casa Vinicola Duca di Salaparuta was established in 1824, and is one of the renowned producers of Italian table wines. The wine was named Corvo, which means raven, or crow, as these birds were so fond of eating the grape berries during the early days of the vineyards. The Salaparuta vineyards which lie near Mt. Etna, in Casteldaccia, impart a character which is totally distinct to its wines.
Corvo white is produced from the Pinot Blanc grape. Cuttings of this French variety were brought to Sicily by the Duke of Salaparuta over 150 years ago. The wines resemble their French counterparts, but with a distinctiveness which the volcanic soils of the island impart.
This Corvo white has an intriguing bouquet, a straw yellow color, and a fullness and flavor which are unique. It is crisp and has a delightful lingering finish. It is at its best served chilled with fish, mildly seasoned dishes, or with veal. A very distinctive wine at au attractive price.
