You know. I have never understood why sales of Merlot dropped so significantly soon after the release of the movie "Sideways." Seriously, why would we stop drinking a wine just because a playwright wrote into the script of an obnoxious character that makes a comment condemning Merlot? Merlot is the mainstay of Bordeaux and is the base wine for some of the best wines in the world. In fact, the most expensive Bordeaux is 100% Merlot (Chateau Petrus). Napa Valley California is the pre-eminent wine district for wines made in the US and this Pig and Poke Merlot is 100% Merlot from 100% Napa Valley. It just received an 88 in its first judging and I bought it all! All 190 cases are mine..mine.mine.mine! And yours. Sandra and I were invited to dinner at a friends (a good wine guy) and it was a small crowd..my friend had obviously gone to the market and purchased a name brand Cabernet Sauvignon. One I have tasted many times. It was so bitter I couldn't drink it. The next day at the market I checked the shelf price..$15.99 marked down to $9.99. A disappointment at any price. Enter the Pig and Poke 2007 Merlot. If I poured this at a party and told the guests it was $19-$20 they wouldn't think twice, but if I told them it was $9.99.they would order some right then and there (though I typically don't take orders at home except "take out the trash"). Come and get it. Only 190 cases were made so.....
