Trace is a premium wine project of Tulip Hill. Founder, Budge Brown, farmed in California for over 50 years. Though he is a UC Davis graduate he would tell you he graduated from the School of Hard Knocks with a degree in Trial and Error and an emphasis in Blood, Sweat and Tears. This project is run by his daughter, Kristi, who wanted more of a hands-on role. Though the winery is in Mendocino, the grapes for this wine came from their vineyard near Livermore.

It all started with the Mount Oso Vineyard in one of the most recently appointed appellations, Tracy Hills AVA, and a crush facility in Kelseyville, California. The 2001 harvest was just around the corner and Budge needed a home for his fruit. Miraculously, he was able to obtain the necessary permits and purchase his winery barely in time for harvest. Tragically, however, Budge died in a private plane crash in May, 2011. His daughter, Kristi, now runs both operations with her brother, Jeff.

Lake County has a history of vineyards and winemaking going back to the late 1800s. Prohibition was the "kiss of death" for both the vineyards and wineries of Lake County. The second hit on this region was the isolation and lack of development of the railroads prohibiting cost-effective transportation of grapes to market. During this time, grape-growing in neighboring counties such as Napa and Mendocino was prospering. A post-prohibition revival of grape gowning began in the late 1960s and has continued up to today with a rapid expansion of wineries throughout the region.

This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon reminiscent of the wines made in the 1960s and '70s. It has all the flavors of Cabernet, but without excessive alcohol or tannins. A great match with BBQ ribs or a pork tenderloin in a light mustard sauce.
