The name Ruby Vine comes from the patina of their vineyards when they are heavy with grapes and awash in the pink glow of California's late afternoon sky. This artisan table wine is deeply textured and richly flavored with the incredible complexity unique to a classic field blend. Field blends were popular in the 50s and 60s in California before consumers started to demand single varietals. Unfortunately, it has become a lost category.
There is something about field blends that make them different from blending wines. Nobody can really explain why. While a typical multi grape blend starts with each wine being grown and crushed separately, a field blend harvests all the grapes at the same time and crushes them all together.
Now, theoretically, the wine should taste the same as one which consists of grapes separately grown and harvested. But, there seems to be a harmony to field blends that makes them more appealing. Like children who grew up together who went to the same schools and lived in the same neighborhood, they share similarities qualities. I told you it didn't make sense but the wines come out excellent so whose to argue?
Here they have blended small lots of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah to create a wine with complex structure and ripe tannins. They have also aged the wine in large and small oak barrels to give firm but forgiving tannins and a lush finish.
This selection is a full-bodied and fruit-forward wine that is ripe and lush. On the nose, cassis, plum and crushed berry aromas are layered with a hint of black pepper. The finish just keeps on going as it would with baby back pork ribs.
