We didn't know it at the time, but we know these guys very well and love their story. First of all, this wine is made by a winery called The Other Guys, who are anything but. They are 4th Generation Sebastianis, of the famous Sebastiani Winery in Sonoma, established in 1895 by Sam Sebastiani.
Today, the winery is run by August Sebastiani who is determined to make wines that will continue his family's reputation for quality winemaking for generations to come. He is building this company one handshake at a time, stepping back to the early days when all wine companies were family owned and operated. It's a refreshing change from the mega-corps that run things today.
So where does Leese-Fitch come in? Well, that's but another interesting story. The name celebrates the restoration of the Leese-Fitch building located in the Sonoma Square. Built in 1836, this historical landmark in Sonoma Plaza was named after Jacob Leese and Henry Fitch, brothers-in-law to General Mariano Vallejo, the founder of the town of Sonoma.
But, it's not the stories that sold us on the wine. It was the wine! This gorgeous Cabernet was sourced from several warm vineyards from the Northeastern side of Monterey County to Paso Robles and Clarksburg. As a result, it produced a wine with intense color and brilliant flavors. A touch of Paso Robles Cabernet contributes depth and mouth feel as well as that dusty Paso Robles feel that comes across in the brambly nature of this blend.
This Cabernet came off the vine at the end of October and didn't miss a hitch. In fact, it adds structure to the blend. This Cabernet adds ripe blackberry flavors with the addition of a touch of Syrah to round out the tannins and add cherry fruit notes.
Dark garnet in color, this represents aromas of fresh roasted hazelnuts, espresso and black currants. The flavor blend exudes deep blackberry notes with toffee, dark cherry, Dutch cocoa, tea leaf and fig compote. On the finish, there are rich tannins, caramel oak notes, toasted coconut and black raspberry. A stunning addition to a rack of lamb with mint pesto or braised short ribs in red wine and garlic.
