As luck would have it, this wine is also made by The Other Guys of Sebastiani fame who crafted the Leese-Fitch Cabernet Sauvignon this month. The Sebastiani Winery in Sonoma was founded in 1895 by Sam Sebastiani. By making wine from a small vineyard, he was able to save enough money to buy from his small bulk wine brokerage business in 1904.
Sam was able to survive Prohibition by making wine for medical and sacramental purposes. In 1944, his son, August, took over the wine business due to the passing of his father and began an expansion that took Sebastiani wines all over the globe. That concept was taken further when his sons, Sam and Don, took the reins in the 1970s. August Sebastiani was an icon in the wine business. You would never see him without his trademark bib overalls and that slow gate which made it seem as though he was younger than his years, but in reality he was anything but. A gentle giant of a man who's passing in 1980 was a sad day for all of us.
The expansion became enormous under his sons as Sebastiani became a household word. In 1985, a famous split occurred between Sam and Don where Sam went off to do his own winery, Viansa, named after him and his wife, Vickie. Don continued his expansion efforts until he sold the winery in 2008 and established Don Sebastiani and Sons. His son, August now runs The Other Guys, a completely separate entity from Don Sebastiani and Sons.
At 26, August became the youngest member of the Sonoma City Council and eventually Mayor Pro Tem. Guess he liked wine better than politics because he didn't run for re-election. Instead he wanted to devote his full attention to his wine operation.
With a pale straw color, this blend of Swanky white boasts aromas of white peach, pineapple, lily blossom and kiwi. This wine starts with good weight and flavors of nectarine, Bartlett pear, lemon curd and red apple. Then turns a corner and finishes with flavors of tangerine sorbet, cotton candy, meyer lemon and lime zest. Great with a Chinese chicken Salad, scallops in an orange beurre blanc or with smoked Gouda and Mortadella.
