This 2009 Beaujolais is the product of ideal growing conditions. The year was very warm, with just a bit of rain in June and a mostly sunny July and August. Harvest began in late August and continued for several weeks. The near perfect weather led to extremely healthy vines. The resulting wines from Beaujolais are some of the best the region has ever produced.
Christophe Vial is the winemaker here. He began his winemaking career in 1991 working at Burgundy's legendary Domaine des Comtes Lafon. After ten years, he left to become the winemaker at Domaine de Montille. In 2007, Vial brought his skills and experience to Evening Land. His deep roots in Burgundy have allowed him to identify unique and distinctive parcels from which he sources fruit for his Evening Land wines. Vial has overseen all renovations and operations at the newly acquired Ch?teau de Bligny.
Greg Ralston is President & CEO and comes with over 20 years of leadership experience working with great wine brands such as Chateau Montelena, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The fruit that comprises this wine is sourced from the areas of Quinci? and Beaujeu. After a manual harvest, the grapes are whole-cluster pressed and then fermented through semi carbonic maceration. After aging for 10 months, the wine is bottled.
Whole cluster fermentation is unique to Beaujolais. The grapes are harvested and placed in a stainless tank. When the tank is full, the top is sealed shut. The grapes on the bottom are very gently crushed by the grapes on top. As the resulting carbon dioxide rises due to the fermentation, they slowly crack the skins of the grapes. As a result, most of the fermentation takes place more gently than any machine ever does.
What this does is accentuate the fruit as much as possible, thus making an incredibly delicious wine right out of the gate. This wine has great components of jam and grape with pure strawberry flavors oozing out of the glass. This is a must have with chicken in a tarragon sauce.
