Since 2004 Fita Preta wines have enjoyed growing commercial success due to the commitment and expertise of their two owners. Ant?nio Ma?anita is a Portuguese national residing in Lisbon. He is responsible for winemaking and distribution in the Portuguese- and French- speaking markets. David Booth is English and resides in Cascais, Portugal. He is responsible for grape purchase in markets where English is the international business language.

David and Ant?nio now lead a small and highly dedicated team of committed young wine professionals working together in production, marketing and sales. Everyone on the production side has international experience in vineyards and wineries in countries such as Chile, USA, Australia, and France.

The partners' incredible zeal for quality is evident in all phases of production. Vineyards are photographed from the air using infra-red photography to identify and define where the very best grapes are growing. This is confirmed by ground monitoring. In the weeks preceding harvest, development is tracked using laser technology. Vines are monitored throughout the season to ensure that the balance of leaves and fruits is in balance to produce top-quality grapes.

If the vineyard is high-tech, the winery has more in common with the best labor-intensive traditional methods of European craft winemaking, such as using wild yeast ferments, whole bunch pressing of white grapes, manual cap management, extended maceration, egg white fining, and the extensive use of barrels for both fermentation and maturation.

Our selection is a blend of Aragonez (the Portuguese name for Tempranillo), Trincadeira and Alicante Bouchet. These are obviously not household names in California except for Alicante, which has been an excellent blending grape here for decades. It exhibits a dark ruby and violet color with a generous aroma of red fruits, subtle toasted spice and refreshing eucalyptus notes. The imposing flavors scream out to be matched with imposing foods such as garlic-and-rosemary-infused lamb leg or venison sausages.
