Retief Goosen is one of the best golfers of his generation and is a truly global professional, boasting participation in three PGA Tours, the US PGA Tour, the European Tour and the Southern African Tour, and winning tournaments in every corner of the world. In recognition of his 30 amateur wins, and for his outstanding contribution to amateur golf, he was awarded Springbok colors before turning professional in 1990. Retief was introduced to entrepreneur Dr. Werner Roux, and together they started The Goose Wine in 2007. There are five large dams on the farm that host various waterfowl. Just a week after the company was formed, a flock of wild spur-winged geese moved into the area and have made one of these dams their home. In Afrikaans the birds are known as "wilde makou," Africa's heaviest and largest species of freshwater geese. Thus, the name of the winery was found. The Upper Langkloof Appellation is arguably the coolest winegrowing region in South Africa. These extreme climatic conditions ensure complexity of fruit and unique grapes that are handcrafted into world-class wines. After hand-harvesting the grapes, they are transported to cool rooms, where the temperature is maintained at 55 degrees Fahrenheit for twelve hours to cool the grapes. Upon arrival at the wine cellar, the now-cold grapes are sorted before being crushed and pumped into open cement troughs. There the juice is allowed to ferment on the skin cap for eight to fourteen days, extracting the vital character and color from the skins into the wine as it develops. Malolactic fermentation is completed in imported French oak barrels. Our selection is an incredibly crisp and clean offering and a classic rendition of the Sauvignon Blancs from this area. The flavors range from exotic quince and guava to a grapefruit tinge and gooseberry. A perfect foil for grilled salmon with a tomato, onion and garlic relish.
