For over eleven generations, Bodegas Chivite has grown from its original establishment in Navarra to estates in Rioja, Rueda and Ribera del Duero. They have become the most important, as well as one of the most respected producers and exporters of Navarra's wines. Bodegas Chivite has forged a reputation for quality and consistency second to none in the "Denominaci?n de Origen".

In 1989, Julian Chivite turned to world renowned architect Rafael Moneo, to design a winery that could produce as many as 225,000 bottles of wine a year while fitting its structure into this rich historic and natural setting. Moneo conceived of the building as a backdrop to the freestanding historic structures, embracing them on three sides.

Verdejo is one of Spain's higher quality white grape varieties which languished in obscurity for several hundred years before being rediscovered in the 1970s. It is a native grape of Rueda in Northwest Spain and is now its principal white grape variety. It is most successfully cultivated in high altitude vineyards where the soils are calcareous and well drained.

Previously, Verdejo-based wines were worryingly prone to premature oxidation. However techniques including early harvesting and cool fermentation have led to the delicate and youthful aromatic freshness of the wines being preserved.

This new wine range applies the Chivite family's long winemaking experience in create wines from some of the most relevant Denominations of Origin in Spain and from their native grape varieties. These wines are the best proof of Chivite's winemaking skills and knowledge. This Rueda wine is the finest expression of native Verdejo grape variety. Made from old vine, low-yielding vines with a most delicate production process, the Baluarte Verdejo is an aromatic, floral, fruity and fresh, yet complex white. It is a perfect example as to why this grape has been resurrected and enjoying its greatest popularity as an ideal aperitif or simply with shellfish, fish and white meat.
