The year 1974 saw the start of an important campaign to give renewed prestige to the wines of San Marino, when a government-backed project isolated the best strains of the traditional local vines and made them available for planting in new vineyards. The winemakers of the republic, fully aware of the significance of this farsighted project, decided to create a special association, and the Consorzio Vini Tipici (Consortium of Traditional Wines) was founded in 1976.

The vineyards are at an altitude of between 300 and 1200 feet above sea level. The variety of wines that can be cultivated in San Marino for winemaking are Biancale, Moscato, Ribolla, Canino, Cargarello and Sangiovese. Recently, other vines have been introduced experimentally, and these include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pignoletto, Sauvignon, Vermentino, Ancellotta, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Consorzio Vini Tipici now boasts over 300 members, representing an annual output of 1400 tons of grapes out of the total of 2000 tons harvested in the republic every year.

Most of these vineyards are situated in the areas of Serravalle, Domagnano and Faetano, on the eastern slopes of Mount Titano that run gently down towards the coast of the Adriatic Sea, about 10 miles away.

The winemakers of San Marino share a common heritage made up of traditions dating back many centuries and an intense passion for the land and its produce. The tenacity and enthusiasm that they dedicate to the cultivation of their vineyards is reflected in a remarkable range of exquisite wines, capable of accompanying any style of cookery in the world.

Our selection is a blend of 50% Ribolla di San Marino grape and 50% Chardonnay. We don't see much Ribolla, and one wonders why. It is a spicy, racy grape that adds incredible character to a blend, but also holds up well on its own. The acidity here will match well with rich sauces like pasta carbonara.
