The name "Michael David" comes from the Phillips brothers - Michael and David. The Phillips family has been farming in the Lodi region of California for over 160 years. The brothers are 5th generation grape growers whose roots, literally and figuratively, run deep. All of their 750 acres of grapes are certified sustainable by the Lodi Rules organization, which has very strict standards for farms in the Lodi area.
Lodi is the new darling of the wine world. As costs for production and demand for more affordable wines increase, the pressure is put on small and medium-sized growers to make better wines. The growers in Lodi seem to be doing that better than anyone as it is establishing itself as the alternative to the higher priced offerings further north.
Sauvignon Blanc has always been a favorite in Lodi. The warm air is softened by the ocean breezes that seem to find their way into this inland paradise. As a result, Lodi can boast classically styled wines with more depth and character than any of the other areas in their relative vicinity.
This offering is a perfect example of how soil and climate, enhanced by great winemaking, can make exciting wines. The classic herbal and white nectarine are evident in the nose and again on the palate. It finishes clean and fresh with a lingering and alluring citrus component similar to orange zest and lemon peel.
