Kumbaya is a throwback to the 60s era. It represents the bringing of unity and harmony back to Kumbaya by combining different grape varietals together to create a cohesive blend. They approach their winemaking from a yin-and-yang perspective; balancing strength with suppleness, fruitiness with structure and a mouth filling entry with a crisp finale.
Kumbaya is made with grapes drawn from California's best cool climate growing regions including the Sierra Foothills, Lodi and the California's North Coast including Napa Valley, Sonoma and Lake County
They search high and low for Kumbaya grapes, across vineyards in California's best growing regions until they reach the blissful state of balance between acid and sugar. The year 2010 featured a very wet spring and delayed bud break to begin a stressful growing season but once the grapes were harvested and the fermentation was complete, the wine showed a delicious complexity.
Vineyards in the Lodi River Delta and Central Valley experienced much longer growing season than usual, producing excellent results. At the end of the vintage, a heat wave allowed grapes to reach full maturity.
Kumbaya is made at Sonoma Wine Company. The main facility and offices of Sonoma Wine Company are located in Graton, California just five miles West of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. The Graton facility was originally built in 1947 as an apple processing plant on the Hallberg Apple Ranch and was later converted into a wine production facility in the 1960's where it first operated as Chateau St. Jean and later became Associated Vintners Group operating as a contract wine facility.
In 2000, Codera Wine Group's Derek Benham, founder and owner of the Blackstone Merlot brand, purchased the contract business. In 2001, Codera sold the Blackstone brand and contract business to Constellation Brands. In 2003, Sonoma Wine Company purchased the Graton production facility back from Pacific Wine Partners and has grown to five facilities in Sonoma and Napa Counties.
Our 2010 Sonoma selection has a delicate honeysuckle and citrus notes on the nose with expansive citrus, ripe pear and golden apple flavors. The wine is fruity on the palette yet finishes crisp. It pairs well with exotically seasoned or spicy dishes such as Thai or Indian curry, chicken Satay or Cuban pulled pork.
