Silver Buckle is made by Rutherford Wine Company. Many of their family vineyards were originally Spanish cattle "rancheros" in the 1800s. Neighbors continue to raise cattle that are fed on harvested cover crops. In return, they supply Rutherford with Nature's finest fertilizer! They also share a rich cultural heritage and a commitment to natural, earth-friendly practices.
Winemaker, Steve Rued, believes that winemaking begins in the vineyard; carefully matching the site and varietal then selecting and harvesting fruit at just the right moment. Flavors may be slightly modified through winemaking techniques but a wine's unique flavor and essential character develops on the vine.
Rutherford Wine Company Winery Operations are Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing, a partnership between the Wine Institute & the California Association of Winegrape Growers. Sustainability ensures long-term health of the entire ecological system by promoting and maintaining the biodiversity of plants and animals, conserving the natural resources and supporting the viability of the agricultural community for generations to come.
Their ecological efforts include allowing areas of land to remain in a natural and pristine state to support indigenous plant and wildlife. In the vineyards, they minimize the use of synthetic substances by substituting or augmenting them with age-old methods such as natural predation to help control insects and animals that are harmful to the vines. These practices help to limit environmental impact, increase soil and plant health and vigor that result in higher quality grapes.
Natural resources and energy conservation are served by water reclamation and reuse. Solar power contributes to lower energy use, improved air quality and a smaller carbon footprint. One of their family's refrigeration systems, assembled and installed in-house, consists of nearly 5,000 solar panels that produce close to one million watts of electrical power.
As active members of the Central Coast Vineyard Team, they are establishing and defining sustainable guidelines and educating the larger grower community to help keep the land productive, profitable and vital for many years.
Our selection is primarily Syrah, with the addition of Merlot and a touch of Malbec. We've featured this blend make-up before and are constantly amazed at how good it is. Lovely earth and blueberry would enhance a pork tenderloin in a mustard & rosemary sauce.
