Rotation is a very unique project indeed. It was created by Master Brands in conjunction with winemaker Sam Jennings with the aim of showcasing the art of the vintage rotation. Rotation produces a full range of wines including Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and a Red Blend. Each wine is a blend of two or more vintages which add different elements to the wine that one vintage rarely can.

If you look at the label, you will notice two distinct elements. The top white part is smooth to the touch and represents the younger vintage, the 10% un-oaked Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2011 vintage. The bottom blue part represents the older vintage, the 90% oaked Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2009 vintage.

Wine is a complex and sensitive product. It is influenced by many factors each season, such as temperature variation, rain, soils, wind, etc. Being able to read the vintage lies in the winemaker's special skills. Very few winemakers have mastered these skills. It takes many vintages for a winemaker to be able to make a wine of consistent superior quality and even then Mother Nature can throw you a curve ball.

The wines are sourced from vineyards in Napa and then blended and bottled in Napa. The 2009 vintage was matured with medium roasted oak staves for 12 months. The 2011 vintage was fermented in steel and has never touched oak.

There's a reason why Napa is so famous. Its soil is a mixture of minerals, organic matter and particles of different sizes. The largest are the stones and small gravel. Silt is composed of particles that are smaller still because clay has the smallest particles of all. When all are present the soil is perfect for growing grapes.

Rotation's concept is to blend barrel aged wine with wine fermented in stainless steel. Lots are selected from two different vintages. The young stainless steel fermented wine contributes a lot of fresh fruit flavors and vivacity while the barrel aged wine in the blend lends a layer of complexity to the wine. Our selection is a classic Napa Cabernet. It has all the earth, fruit and complexity that makes this area so famous. Just try it with a fillet mignon and see.
