Bago de Touriga is a small, independent winery in the Douro Valley of Portugal. The owners Luis Saares Dnarte and Joao Roseira also own the incomparable Port producer, Quinta do Infantado, whose aim is to make balanced, food-friendly wines that express the unique terroirs of the Douro's amazing vineyards. Quinta do Infantado is a true single Quinta Producer. It is 100% estate grown and estate bottled. The Roseira family has owned the estate for more than a century. The Douro Valley's vineyards are classed A through E with A being the best. All of lnfantados vineyards are class A and all the grapes are crushed in the traditional way, trodden by foot in the Old Stone Lagars. This is recognized as the best but most labor intensive way of crushing grapes for Port. Almost all Port is still made this way. All Infantado Ports are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The house style is a Port that is less sweet or medium sweet to show more of the red wine characteristics and less cloying. In the largest vintages, Infantado only makes 8,000 cases. It is this same fanaticism to detail that goes into this impressive Terroso selection. Very few dry red wines are made here from the same grapes that go into the making of Port but those that are, can be incredible. This one is no exception. Terroso was made from selected grapes of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roiz and Tinta Barroca and grown at Cima Corgo. All the stems were removed before the grapes were crushed to allow the grapes to ferment without the potentially astringent stems. It was then aged 12 months in the tank and 5 months in French and American oak barrels and then bottled in April of 2008. Terroso is an elegant and fresh wine, balancing Douro's fruit aromas and flavors with fine tannins and acidity. Served well with grilled loin of rabbit with smoked bacon and fava beans or grilled beef tenderloin with fresh herb fried rice. December Vintners Series Newsletter (.pdf) |
