The Zuccardi family has always believed that working with nature is the only way to produce wines of quality, character and appeal. The unique climate of Argentina, the Mendoza region specifically, is beneficial to the wine production by allowing the harmonization with nature. All the components, such as dry climate, great temperature amplitude between day and night, high sun radiation, and low humidity have helped the Zuccardi family produce healthy grapes. In addition, the low rainfall ensures a dry climate for the vines, allowing the control of diseases and pests to be done naturally without the use of fungicides and pesticides. Jose Zuccardi notes that the climate in Mendoza is ideal for grape growing, with strong sunlight for growth and cool nights to gain acidity. The wide day-to-night thermal differences are considered a great plus by grape growers, while the quality of light in the area is excellent and free from the higher levels of solar radiation. These weather conditions have helped them grow vines under organic conditions. The 2002 vintage was the second year Familia Zuccardi picked organic grapes. Currently, nearly fifty percent of the estates vineyard land is certified organic. Over the next decade the family plans on turning the entire vineyard planting organic. Torrontes is a white wine grape that makes fragrant, rich and fruity wines with crisp acidity and good body. For the past 10 years or so, Malbec has taken center stage as the premier grape of the Mendoza region of Argentina. It is beyond equal when grown here. However, Torrontes is waking up people's senses to its fragrant and exotic components similar to Viognier and Verdello. Our selection is pure Torrontes from this area. The nose is super clean and ripe with stone fruit, guava and kiwi. Bits of honeysuckle round out the exotic flavors which are further amplified by piquant acidity which segues into the grand and glorious finish. A pure delight with scallops in an orange and fennel broth. March Vintners Series Newsletter (.pdf)
