Helderberg Winery means Bright Mountain, and is named after its beauty. It rises majestically above the sweeping False Bay, known for its seal colony just 30 minutes from Cape Town, South Africa. Around this mountain, farmers have planted vines for centuries, discovering that its soils and proximity to the ocean are ideal for the cultivation of premium grapes. In 1906, the Helderberg Winery was established and its first grapes in their new winery on the slopes of the Helderberg. Over the following decades, the winery grew in stature, based on its pedigree of consistently producing excellent wines, with notably superb Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery was instrumental in establishing the area's reputation and high regard, and today the Helderberg is widely acknowledged as one of South Africa's premium producers. Helderberg was purchased by Boekenhoutskloof Winery in 2011 with the intention of furthering the reputation of this cherished property. Marc Kent is the chief winemaker and driving force behind the dynamic Boekenhoutskloof. A maverick spirit, Marc is unafraid to experiment with the unconventional, but his principal commitment is to quality on every level and in every detail. Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, the farm's name means "Ravine of the Boekenhout" (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. Its proximity to the ocean assures optimal ripeness for this Sauvignon Blanc. When coupled with the perfect soils here, we are presented with an unbeatable combination. This grape has always been a stellar standout here and our selection is no less than a perfect example. Our selection reveals a vibrant nose showing a burst of capsicum, cut grass, gooseberries, figs and lime. The rich palate exudes layers of pure fruit and mineral notes which combine to produce a remarkable intensity of flavors. This wine is perfectly balanced with seamless natural acidity, purity of ripe fruit and harmonious lingering finish. March Vintners Series Newsletter (.pdf)
