March 1975 Selection of California Wine

Stonegate winery was founded two years ago in Calistoga. They have released three varietals: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir A Cabernet will come later.

The Sauvignon Blanc grape in France contributes in the blends of the dry white wines of the Bordeaux regions. This Sauvignon Blanc by Stonegate was aged in French Oak, and has the characteristic perfume of the white Sauvignon grape. Stone-gates own grapes were used in this selection.

Stonegate is about as small as a winery can get with two full time employees and a total output of 7,200 cases per year. According to David B. Spalding, they do not plan on getting any bigger. This is a delight to hear because it assures the individ¬ual attention that is possible in a small winery.

Serve chilled with white meat or fish and test this wine from the Sauvignon Blanc grape.

March 1975 Selection of Imported Wine

CHATEAU de PIC - 1971

By keeping a constant surveillance on the wine industry and scouring the market for good buys, we are able to bring you this outstanding value as our March selection. Most people wouldn't even look at a chateau bottled Bordeaux for only $2.29 per fifth. Well, we not only looked at it but tasted it and were we surprised!

We found a still young but certainly drinkable light-bodied Bordeaux with a rich, lasting flavor. At this price one could consider this Chateau de Pic (one of the petite chateaus) as the everyday house red. It's very difficult to find a good California red wine at this price, let alone a good Bordeaux. Serve it to company - we won't tell how much it costs!

Goes well with red meats. Open 1/2 hour before serving.

$2.29/fifth $24.73/case
