June 1976 Selection of California Wine
ALICANTE BOUSCHET - ANGELO PAPAGNI - 1973
The San Joaquin Valley of northern California once enjoyed a reputation for producing fine wines. In recent years however, that section of the state has been associated with the production of inexpensive jug wines, frequently of poor quality. A few years ago Angelo Papagni set out to re-establish and perpetuate the highly esteemed achievements of early day San Joaquin vintners.
The Alicante Bouschet grape came to us from France where it is used as a blending grape throughout the Burgundy region. In California, thousands of acres are planted in this variety and it is used extensively for blending. This Papagni wine may well be the first offered as a varietal.
Angelo Papagni Alicante Bouschet is a big wine, very dark in color, with an expansive nose. Try this one with a hearty dish and discover for yourself what the San Joaquin Valley is capable of producing. A surprising wine at an even more surprising price. We consider this a real find.

June 1976 Selection of Imported Wine
RAUENTHALER STEINMACHER - 1970
The Rheingau is considered by some experts to be the greatest white wine district in the world. It covers the foothills of the Taunus range west of Wiesbaden in Germany. Here the vineyards benefit from the warmth of the reflected sunshine off the Rhine.
Rauenthal, from which this wine takes its name, is is a small village of the region, set back in the hills behind Eltville. Its best vineyards are said to be the most valuable agricultural land in all of Germany. In the opinion of many experts it produces the most distinguished of all Rhine wines. A wine labeled as a Rauenthaler Steinmacher is a grosslage, or district wine, which may or may not come from Rauenthal itself.
The riesling grape dominates this entire district and those from the Rauenthal area are noted for spiciness, fruit and breed. This Rauenthaler Steinmacher is a good example of the wines of this area; light and fruity. Serve chilled with light dishes.
