December 1976 Selection of California Wine

In the very heart of the Napa Valley is the Sutter Home Winery, which was originally established in 1874 by Swiss winemaker John Thomann. In 1900 the winery was purchased by John and Jacob Sutter who gave the operation its present name. It was purchased again in 1946 by the Trinchero family who operate it to this day. This is a true family operation with members of the family handling every phase of the operation from winemaking to retail sales at the winery.

The Trincheros own no vineyards of their own, but purchase grapes from Napa growers, and from as far away as the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County. The specialty of the house is Zinfandel, which accounts for almost 85% of the winery's production. The remainder of its output includes a delightful Triple Cream Aperitif, which we are featuring for your holiday enjoyment.

Sutter Home's Triple Cream Aperitif is a rich, luscious sherry style wine. It is at its best served at room temperature with holiday cakes and cookies, fresh fruit, nuts, or simply sipped by itself. Marvelous way to greet holiday guests.

December 1976 Selection of Imported Wine

When one encounters Spanish wine it is most frequently sherry, or the dry red and white wines of the Rioja Valley. Sparkling wine from Spain therefore comes as somewhat of a surprise, and indeed, somewhat of a rarity. The undulating hills of Catalonia province, in the north east, is the home of most of the sparkling wines of Spain. It was Perelada, one of the wines of this district which lost a London High Court case brought by the champagne industry to prevent it from being sold in England as "Spanish Champagne."

This Spanish sparkling wine was made in the traditional methode champenoise, a costly and time consuming process. Wines produced in this manner frequently sell for considerably more than this product.

Freixenet Carta Nevada has a lovely golden yellow color and a pleasant slightly yeasty nose. It is medium-dry and very refreshing on the palate. A surprise out of Spain, and a very nice one at that. Serve this effervescent treat chilled, for a holiday toast. Happy Holidays!

Every year during the holiday season we put forth a genuine effort to provide the best possible selection of wine oriented gifts and gift sets. Each year we have found that these gift sets are increasing in popularity and that wine is becoming THE gift to give to an ever increasing number of people. In response to our observations we have put together our own wine gift selections, packaged in our own distinctive "Cellarmaster" wooden boxes. The wines in these sets were carefully selected to please every wine lover, from the novice to the seasoned connoisseur. Gift boxes range in size from a few bottles to twelve bottle selections and they are priced to suit every gift need. We are most excited about these lovely packages and are sure that you too will be when you see them. Orders for custom packages of your own selections are also accepted.

Each month the "Cellarmaster Newsletter" goes out to the many participants in our "Wine of the Month" program accompanied by two bottles of wine. The first page of this newsletter is always devoted to some brief and, hopefully, informative comments about these wines. The selection always includes a white and red wine; one domestic, and one imported. They alternate each month thereby exposing the participant to a broad spectrum of different wine types and styles. We select our wines for a variety of reasons: they may be new on the market, unusual good values, or all of these reasons combined. We are proud of our record, and can boast of having introduced some truly remarkable and memorable wines to our members over the years. We always attempt to make selections that will be available on a continuing basis. We make participation in this program very easy by limiting the cost of our monthly selections to $10.00 for both bottles, tax included. In most months our selections are well under the established limit. It's a great and fun way to learn more about wine.

This newsletter also goes out to our regular charge customers, as well as to an ever increasing mailing list. We are therefore taking this opportunity to invite all of you to become participants in our popular and rapidly expanding "Cellarmaster Wine of the Month" program. There are no contracts or obligations and you are free to cancel at any time. Join by completing the simple attached form, and look forward each month to a most enjoyable surprise!

The holiday season is frequently the time of year when an old friend or neighbor will stop by, just to say "hello." That's great, and in part that is what the holiday season is all about. This year, rather than a cocktail or beer, offer that occasional visitor a glass of fine port or sherry. Be prepared; we have a good selection of both ports and sherries at the shop as well as some very fine cheeses to accompany your selection.

● In addition to our own Cellarmaster gift boxes we have wine packs from Krug, Mondavi, Masson, Martini, Beringer, Korbel, Inglenook and Christian Brothers. All can he attractively wrapped for holiday giving.

● As usual we have beautifully done gift baskets with standard selections or custom selections of your choice. Contents may include: spirits, liqueurs, wines, or hors d'oeuvres. The artistic decorating ability of our wrappers is well known.

● Special commemorative and decorative decanters in fine crystal or ceramic by major producers. Elegant decanters by Waterford and Baccarat enhance our selection this year.

Fifths, Magnums, Jeraboams, and the new Moet-Chandon "Salamanzer", size bottle of champagne; Mumm's, Pommeray, Korbel, Schramsberg and many others.

We select one domestic and one imported wine and feature it in our wine shop. We send you a bottle of each selection monthly. We send you a newsletter describing the wine and its background. We restrict our selections to the popular price range, not to exceed $10.00 for the two bottles of wine each month. If you are new to wines, it is a good way to learn about them. If you are a seasoned connoisseur, we invite you to test our evaluations and make your recommendations for future selections. (cut here) Please send me the domestic and imported selection each month.
