Some of us yearn for the good old days and some of us can't remember them. Painted Van was created by a winery who not only remembers them, but wants to celebrate those days as well.

Vans were painted in the '60s as the Hippie movement blossomed. It was about the same time that the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in Paso Robles. These two events coincided, but I don't think they were connected.

Andre Tchelistcheff, considered the greatest winemaker in U.S. history, picked the spot that he thought Cabernet Sauvignon would grow best. He was, as usual, correct. The first Doctor's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was made in 1975 at an astounding price of $25.00. That would be a bargain today, but back then it was the most expensive Cabernet on the block - outpricing even the touted Cabernets from Napa.

That single event put Paso Robles on the worldwide wine map and kept it there. Since then, heads turned and started paying attention to wines from Paso Robles.

The forces behind Painted Van saw the handwriting on the bottle and began an extensive planting of Cabernet in their vineyards throughout the '70s and '80s.

The result is this incredible offering. Here is luxury Cabernet at its best. Soft, enveloping fruit surrounded by a cloak of soft vanilla, plum and cassis that paints the palate. It can't get any better.
