As Italian wineries go, Vitiano is a relative infant. It was founded by brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella in 1995 and named after the town in which it was created. The Cotarellas are also relative newcomers, founding their winery, Falesco, in Umbria in 1979. But they hit the ground running.
It seems hard to believe that it was only 40 years ago that Falesco Rosso was introduced. It rose so quickly in the hearts, minds and palates of wine aficionados that it created its own whirlwind.
Overnight, Falesco became one of the most sought-after wines on the planet. It was literally on every single "Best Buy" list of every wine publication. The amazing thing is that it still is. So, when the Cotarellas founded Vitiano, everyone was excited.
We weren't disappointed. The same goals and philosophy that guided Falesco were in place with Vitiano, so it, too, skyrocketed to fame. The brothers just gave the world what too many producers in the wine world fail to provide: a product that most people thought was better than its price.
And so it is with our Bianco selection. Most producers would charge twice as much if they had a wine this good. But, that is also why Vitiano has grown in leaps and bounds to over 200,000 cases a year.
This gem is a blend of equal parts Vermentino and Verdicchio, two of Italy's greatest whites. Fragrances of guava and peach morph into flavors of the same, adding citrus notes as well. An incredibly delicious bargain.
