This is a most puzzling wine. The winery is in New York. But the grapes come from California's Lodi and Sacramento regions. The winery was founded by Ed Madronich, a life-long winery executive whose father tried to found a winery in upstate New York and was denied a license.

A mere 45 years later, in 1999, Ed got his license on the same property. He is joined by his son, Ed Jr., who ran Inniskillin Winery in Canada, one of the finest producers of icewine in the world.

Dave Sheppard was hired as winemaker. He had worked in Burgundy and Germany learning his craft and making one wine of distinction after another. Though their purpose was to promote New York there's no sin in making wine from California grapes.

So, the Madronich family tried their luck in California and, lo and behold, they find some pretty nice grapes there. Who would have thought?

Merlot is not particularly known in Lodi or the Sacramento delta, but after tasting this one, we can't imagine why. All the components we look for in Merlot are here and then some.

The aromas of blueberry, spice, plum and mint just glide into your consciousness and deposit wave upon wave of flavor and extract along the way. The experience is not short lived; the sensations continue in endless fashion with each turn of flavor complementing the last. It finishes with every piece coming together in perfect harmony.
