I've always lived by the credo that I'd rather be lucky than good. Until now, it never occurred to me that both would be the better alternative. Chris Nickolopoulos and Elijah Pfister (try putting that on the marquee!) are both lucky and good. They've been close friends since college. They shared a passion for wine, as Chris had worked for a distributor in Chicago and Elijah's family were on the retail side of the wine business.

They were both trying to figure out what their mission would be in wine when, in 2009, they were approached by a high-end winemaker with some bulk wine to sell under their own label. There was a recession going on and sales were flat, but that didn't stop them. Just the opposite. Their previous connections helped things fall into place, and Ten Mile was born.

One thing led to another, and soon our boys were being asked to sell other overstock wine from high-end wineries at low-end prices. It was only a few years later that they purchased Nine North Wine Company to fold their operation into.

Our selection has the pedigree of wines costing more than double this price. It is a blend of wines from the Columbia Valley and Horse Heaven Hills in the Yakima Valley, home to the top wineries in Washington.

It could legally be called Cabernet Sauvignon because that is 80% of the blend, the rest being Merlot and a splash of Syrah. It exhibits all the subtlety and grace of this area, with plum and anise showing through with earth and spice.
