Jean-Francois Renucci of Terra Vecchia was born and raised on the island of Corsica, just off Italy's northeastern coast. Most think of Corsica as part of Italy, as it is just above the Italian island of Sardinia. But it is actually part of France - and famous for being where Napoleon lived out the last of his years.
The Terra Vecchia property was developed by Robert Skalli in 1961. He planted almost 500 acres, the largest estate on the island. Skalli's grocery and wine business became so large that the vineyard didn't fit in with his portfolio, so he decided to sell it. But he made one condition on the sale: that it must be purchased by a Corsican who would retain the vineyards.
Jean-Francois Renucci stepped forward. He carried the property seamlessly through the next era, even improving on the wines with better processing techniques and technological advances.
There are many indigenous grapes grown here that most people couldn't even pronounce. Some of them are spectacular, but have a limited audience. Renucci planted more recognizable varietals like Chardonnay, Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Vermentino, the star grape of its neighboring island, Sardinia.
Renucci runs an efficient, sustainable environment which is committed to giving back to the land as much as it gives him. It shows in this lovely wine with its delicate, finely honed notes of lilac and clover, peach and cinnamon, crowned by a long exhilarating finish.
