Spartan Hills Winery is part of the Direct Cellars portfolio of exceptional wines, founded by Kevin Raulston. Kevin spent 25 years in business development, marketing and finance in the US and international markets before starting Direct Cellars. Besides his interest in wine, he couldn't have had better experience.

His mantra has always been that quality sells, so if you want to sell something, it should be of obvious quality. Too often that concept gets lost in the translation, but not here.

For this gem, Kevin went to Paso Robles, but not just anywhere in Paso Robles. He chose all the grapes from the Margarita Vineyard, considered one of the best vineyards in the appellation. As a matter of fact, it is so famous that it has its own, more specific appellation, Santa Margarita Ranch, and is the only vineyard in the appellation.

The land sits on an ancient sea bed composed of fossilized shells, gravel and silt, and you couldn't find a better environment for growing Merlot. It's also one of the coolest growing areas in Paso Robles, so the grapes are allowed to hang on the vine for an extended period, extracting all those nutrients from the soil and enriching the character of the wine.

The result is a nuanced, yet extracted offering. Those beautiful Merlot high notes of cassis and black plum are matched with the sublime elegance of soft, enveloping tannins that carry the flavors from beginning to glorious finish.
