Yali is one of the new wave of wineries in Chile that seems to be doing everything right. We featured their sensational Sauvignon Blanc a few months ago and it was probably the best one we've had from Chile. It seems that's what they do.

Besides being sustainable, the winery is a natural wetlands reserve, protected by Chilean decree and has to adhere to certain requirements, which they are proud to do.

Winemaker Sergio Hormazabal studied winemaking in France, obtaining a degree in winemaking and viticulture. He made wine there before returning home to Chile in 2009 to run the winery. His success has been almost unbelievable, as Yali has jumped to the top of the wine chain there.

Like Malbec in Argentina, Carmenere in Chile is a star. Both grapes originally came from France, where neither did particularly well. There are no definitive answers as to why or how, but both seem to thrive in their new South American homes.

Carmenere was grown in Bordeaux for some time, where it was mislabeled as Merlot because it had similar leaf veins and flavor. When DNA testing came about, it was discovered that it wasn't Merlot, in spite of their similarities.

The French banished it. The Chileans gratefully took it as their own, where it is now considered one the best reds in the country. Soft, yet medium tannins and lovely cherry and cocoa are the key here.

I opened the Yali, wine of Chile and am thoroughly enjoying it. I was supposed to receive the wine on Tuesday but FedEx did not get it here until yesterday which was Thursday. This happens every time I order wine from you. I know it's not your fault but when you stay home because it has to be signed for & it doesn't come it's maddening. I told them I was going to start telling the companies that use them which is what I am doing. Back to the wine. Absolutely love it and cannot wait to try the others I ordered.
