December 1978 Selection of California Wine

LOUIS MARTINI - TAWNY PORT

Louis M. Martini worked for several California vintners before ultimately settling in St. Helena in 1933 to fulfill his ambition of making fine wines. By the time of his death in 1974, at the age of 87, Martini had become a legend in his own time. The winery has become widely known for its table wines, but also produces some fine dessert wines, such as this Tawny Port.

True Portuguese ports are often blends of as many as fifteen different grape varieties. Four of the most famous of these grapes are the Tinta Madeira, Tinta Cao, Touriga, and the Souzao. Each port producer however, blends according to his own particular taste. Martini Tawny Port is produced by the fractional blending system, in which many lots of selected ports, some of which have been aged for 10-12 years, are blended.

Sweet, luscious, and flavorful this Martini Tawny Port is a perfect holiday drink. Serve it at room temperature with nuts, cheese and fruit cake.

December 1978 Selection of Imported Wine

HENRI PIPER JOLI BRUT - N.V.

Every year, the Cellarmaster Wine of the Month Club, has tried to select a sparkling wine for your New Years Eve celebration. It is becoming harder to stay within the committed price ranges and find outstanding values, however here is a discovery for the price.

Joli Brut is a French sparkling wine, from the famous house of Piper Heidsieck, founded in 1785. They are headquartered in the heart of the French Champagne region, in Reims. However, our selection is not labeled "champagne" because the grapes are grown in the Loire Valley, and therefore do not command that designation. We are not told what grape varieties are used, but you can depend on the care, expertise, scientific know how, and winemakers art exercised in every cuvee.

Seventeen months ago when this sparkling wine was introduced to the U.S. market, the news release announced, "A French Sparkling Wine at domestic prices." We think it surpasses equivalent California champagnes in the same price range.

The wine has fine bubbles, traditional of a well made champagne, a beautiful full nose with a good yeasty depth. The flavor is clean, crisp, and pleasant. Happy New Year.
