The French take their wine very seriously. The Bordelaise even more so. After all, France makes close to one-fourth of all the wine made in the world. Bordeaux's moniker is that it is the largest fine wine appellation in the world. That is a rather bold statement, but difficult to argue.

It's also difficult to comprehend in that there are literally hundreds of appellations and then there are sub-appellations and then.well, you get the idea. Then there are the appellations that are not typical, like Ricaud.

Grapes have been grown at Ricaud for nearly 400 years. The current proprietor, Alain Thienot, acquired the property in 1980 and has lifted it to great heights. Technically, Ricaud is in Entre-deux-Mers. But, in reality, it is just across the river from Graves, as in literally less than a mile. It shares the exact same soil and climate as Graves and as a result makes white wines just as good as Graves, but for much less because the appellation is Cadillac, not Graves. And if you're still following this, it's in a sub-appellation of Cadillac, Dourthe, by the way, the appellation was there before the car.

The greatest whites in Bordeaux come from Graves and the prices reflect that. Our Ricaud could stand next to any of them with ease. You can almost smell the wet granite along with Asian pear, white peach and fresh fig. The palate completes the process and sends all to a piquant, stunning finish.
