The property of Chateau Villars has been in the Gaudrie family for six generations. The chateau is situated on a southwest facing plateau in the village of Saillans, about three and a half miles north of Libourne. Jean-Claude and Brigitte established the estate to its present stature, and are now joined by their two sons, Philippe and Thierry. Phillipe is responsible for the management of the winery, and Thierry takes care of the winemaking.

Chateau Villars produces their Grand Cru and Chateau Malvat produces everyday companion characterized, above all, by its roundness. However, being vintners in Fronsac for seven generations, a wine in the classic style of the appellation needs to complete the offering. Therefore, 9.65 hectares are exclusively reserved for Chateau Moulin Haut Villars. Two different types of terroir are found here. There is the classic combination of clay and limestone that lends the wine its power, and there is the lesser-known clay and silt mix, which is a lighter and more "vivacious" type of soil.

This vintage experienced some peculiar weather, after an unusually cool start to the spring, the vines grew very quickly, thanks to a long dry and hot period from April to July. The subsequent rains in August were favorable for the vines. It continued to rain through September, and while it affected the morale of the winegrower, the quality of the vintage remained excellent.

It is a full-bodied, rich, dense wine that expresses beautifully the personality of its hilly terroir. Chateau Moulin Haut Villars exhibits a charming bouquet, full of ripe dark fruit, noticeably of black cherries, with a touch of spices. On the palate, the wine unfolds into an elegant creaminess with rounded tannins. Pair this wine with gamier meats, such as venison or richer beef dishes, like stew. This wine will also complement roasted duck, even crispy Chinese-style duck buns. For vegetarian fare, pair with stewed lentils and mushrooms or grilled eggplant.
