Chateau Beauregard Ducasse was founded in the Graves appellation of Bordeaux in 1850 by Albert Duran. Today it is run by three generations of the Perromat family who are the 6th generation of Duran. Graves literally means "gravel" and refers to the soil's rocky surface. Beauregard is located on the highest hilltop in Graves, further extracting the minerals that make this wine so stellar.
One of the first growths of 1855 was Haut-Brion in Graves-the beginning of what makes Graves the only appellation in Bordeaux that is as renowned for its reds as its whites, which coincidentally, is more expensive. Graves also houses the Sauternes appellation, considered unmatched for their dessert wines. It can boast that it makes some of the greatest red, white and dessert wines in the world. There is no other appellations we can think of that can say that.
The grapes in this selection are what we like to call the ying and yang of whites, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Here the Sauvignon Blanc contributes bold flavors and blistering acidity. The Semillon brings the elusive fruit and nuance. This blend is 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. This is the reverse of most wines of this combination, but the altitude of the vineyards dictated more finesse from the Semillon.
The result is a momentous amalgam of pineapple, peach and floral hints matched with wet slate, chalk and a gripping finish. With a grilled swordfish on sundried tomatoes, it's about as good as it gets.
