The property, Chateau Haut Barrail, with its mill, was founded in 1362, and was formerly called "the house of Bernede". Only the original mill remains. The 14th century 37-acre estate runs along the banks on the Gironde River and was purchased by the Gillet Family in 1984.The first vintage of Chateau Haut Barrail was made in 1995. Les Tourelles produces about 1,250 cases per year using sustainable and HVE Certified farming practices. They strive to only produce the very best.
Les Tourelles vineyard is a 7-acre plot gently sloping towards the Gironde. The soil is composed of Clay and Limestone, typical of Northern Medoc. The winemaking process includes having the grapes double-sorted and destemmed before going through a temperature-controlled fermentation process, taking two to three weeks. They are then aged in traditional French oak vats (80%) and barrique (20%).
While most wine people love to compare California Cabernet Sauvignon to Bordeaux, it really doesn't apply. Merlot accounts for the majority of plantings in Bordeaux and outweighs Cabernet Sauvignon by a margin of three to one. The only exception is the Medoc where the warm climate ripens Cabernet Sauvignon to its full potential. Our selection is a blend of half Merlot and half Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has a dark ruby core, aromas of black fruit, cedar, and earth. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, woody notes, and robust tannins creates a wine that shines as no other. The black fruit mixed with vanilla and spice would soar with steak tartare or pheasant with black truffles.
