Les Hauts de Lagarde is owned by Vignobles Raymond dating back to 1850. It is still run by the founder's descendants. In 2000, Lionel Raymond purchased a chateau in Entre-Deux-Mers that was completely organic. From then on, he converted all other company properties to organic farming, which accounts for only 7% of the chateaux here.
Their commitment to the environment goes beyond organics, embracing sustainability and using Non-GMO ingredients. As with most wineries sporting long histories, Lagarde is very careful in preserving the environment, realizing that doing so will allow them to make great wine. White Bordeaux exemplifies one of the greatest bargains in white wines. While most of the producers in Entre-Deux-Mers produce white and red, the red demands a higher price and respect because, after all, it is Bordeaux! We're fine with that because getting more value for your euro is what we embrace as well.
The grape component here is pretty much the classic combination of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. The Bordelaise have been making this wine for over 200 years. There's no doubt that they experimented with different grapes and percentages. But after awhile, it became apparent which worked best, as it does here. You can almost taste the limestone in the wine. It's the telltale granite expression of Sauvignon Blanc as is the gripping acidity. The Semillon softens the punch and allows a plethora of accompaniment from a cheese and deli meat assortment to a spicy pasta with anchovy and garlic.
