The history of Chateau Les Jonqueyres is truly one of the most fascinating stories we've encountered. The chateau is owned by the Schroder and Schyler House, a company founded in Germany in the early 18th Century. They were very successful merchants setting up operations in other wine-producing countries like France and Italy. They even set up headquarters in Paris. Then, the unthinkable happened.

It was called the French Revolution of 1789. Even though Schroder and Schyler were not French and had no connection to the ruling class, they were considered enemies of the revolution. Their company was disbanded and the owners were imprisoned. They were incarcerated for five years and surely thought that their fate would be at the gallows. Fortunately, saner heads prevailed and they were allowed to return to Germany. The family picked up the pieces and began all over again, regaining their former glory. Today, the company is still run by descendants of the original families and producing wines of superb quality like our Jonqueyres. The chateau is located in Blaye, just across the river from the Pauillac, the most famous appellation in Bordeaux. The blend is 90% Merlot, 7% Malbec, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are 40-80 years old and producing the finest grapes of their lives.

The organic vines are hand-picked and sorted so that only the ripest grapes are used. The result is a classic Bordeaux with earthy essences followed by harmonious, ripe fruit. All that is needed would be a chateaubriand or grilled lamb loin with garlic and rosemary.
