The Ducourt Family acquired Chateau des Combes in 1858. Each generation of Ducourts, have improved and expanded their holdings where today they own over 1,000 acres covering 14 Chateaux. That includes small properties like our Chateau Redon and Grand Cru Classe powerhouses like Carbonnieux in Graves.
The entire operation is headed by Jeremy Ducourt who oversees the winemaking for all the properties. It seems like an impossible job, but the proof of his prowess is in the amazing wines coming from this entity. His grandfather, Henri, first purchased the property which would become Redon in 1967. The name means "round" and refers to the round shape of the land surrounding the Chateau. He and his three offspring, Marie, Phillipe, and Bernard are still involved in the holdings. Chateau Redon is in the appellation of Entre-Deux-Mers which straddles the Right and Left Banks of the two rivers which separate Bordeaux into its separate parts. The Right Bank holds the areas of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, where Merlot and Cabernet Franc dominate. Cabernet Sauvignon has crept in over the decades and now contributes to the blend more than before.
This wine is 100% Merlot, a grape that settles here better than anywhere else in the world. The wines produced from this grape are much more substantial than any other. Our selection is a perfect example. Redon enters the palate with a gentle fruit centric impression and then morphs into violets and spice. The licorice finish suggests tenderloin of beef in a rosemary and red wine reduction.
