When Antoine Moueix settled his family in Bordeaux 200 years ago, he had no idea that his descendants would build wine dynasties there and in California. His great-grandson, Antoine, purchased Chateau Petrus in 1929 at the beginning of the upheaval of the depression. Today, Petrus is one of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world.

Whenever we see the name Moueix associated with any property, we literally take a step back. Realizing that they have an unmatched reputation to uphold means they have to produce wines that live up to that expectation. So, we approached Grand Renom with high expectations and were not disappointed.

The Chateau is about 35 miles East of the city of Bordeaux on the banks of the Gironde river. The 100 acre estate could not be in a better location. Their vineyards receive the benefits of millions of years of deposited sea matter, which is one of the best natural fertilizers in the world.

Only 15 acres are planted to Sauvignon Blanc, but they are positioned on South facing slopes to garner ample sunshine, the main ingredient in ripening grapes. That rich, ripe fruit is ample and obvious in their wine.

The wine, thankfully, sees no oak so the intensity of the grape is its greatest virtue. Gooseberry with citrus and grapefruit are the stars here and ready to pair with a variety of dishes, from raw Kumamoto oysters to black cod marinated in sake.
