Located in Saint Pierre de Bat, 45 kilometers south of Bordeaux, Chateau Laubarit is in the heart of the Entre Deux Mers Haut-Benauge. This property has been in the Dumas and Simonneau families since 1780. In 1965, Pierre-Abel and Nicole Simonneau took over the estate and eventually handed off the reins to their son, Florent, and their daughter-in-law Isabelle. Isabelle, who grew up with her hands in the soil, naturally began working the vines with her husband Florent and his father. She began managing the estate in 1994, and today is running Chateau Laubarit, one of the cleanest and greenest estates in all of Bordeaux.
The Chateau Laubarit estate was a pioneer in organic farming, practicing since 1965. The terroir of the vineyards is thick, broken layers of limestone and clay, with iron-rich topsoil, perfect for growing Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes as well as white grapes such as Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are harvested by hand, de-stemmed and fermented in vats for 10-14 days.
This wine is a lovely ruby red color, with a powerful aroma of red berry fruit with hints of prunes. It is light and fresh, and very drinkable. It smells bright purple, almost like grape jello. The grape juiciness is tempered by some exotic fall flavors, such as cardamom, anise, and some earthy notes of forest floor. This wine is great enjoyed with a slight chill and is a very versatile with food. Pair it with your next cheese plate, be sure to include blue cheese and Gouda. This wine will pair well with steak and pan seared onions, or braised lamb with fennel. You can also pair this wine with Chinese crispy duck pancakes.
