Bordeaux is truly amazing. The more one digs into it, the more it fascinates. Besides its imposing and unmatched position in the world of great wine, it's the history and the sheer mass of it that is truly amazing. Nearly 10,000 growers and chateaux are harbored here.
Fourlouis was founded in 1898 in Margaux by Francois Janouex as a grape grower and merchant. His grandson, Francoise run it. Today, they own 11 chateaux in prime appellations all over the Bordeaux landscape. Forlouis is in the appellation of Montagne Saint-Emilion, one of the most respected appellations in Bordeaux.
The primary grape here is Merlot, which accounts for 80% of the blend with Cabernet Franc contributing the balance. That is close to the percentage of all the grapes grown in Saint-Emilion. Merlot grown here is not like Merlot grown anywhere else. The intensity of the wine is legendary. It is typically very dark and rich with traces of black currant, cherry, blueberry, and chocolate. Most would mistake it for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cabernet Sauvignon was once plentiful here. But, as with nearly all appellations in Europe, after literally centuries of experimentation, it became apparent that Merlot was the best grape for the place. Who's to argue?
In this case, it is a powerful expression of the synergy between terroir and grape. It's a classic expression with dark cherry and blueberry hitting all the notes and begging for a veal chop with black truffles.
