The story began when Joseph Bonfils met his future wife, Honorine Doveaux, after he was exiled in Algeria. Honorine was in fact the very first female to receive the Agricultural Merit award. She worked relentlessly sowing the seeds, planting the extensive vineyards at their family farm in Oran. When Algeria declared its independence from France and nationalized the country including all the Bonfils properties, they came back to France and started over once again. This is clearly a very resilient family. Hard work and determination has led the Bonfils company to now own 12 properties in Bordeaux including La Rose Belair.

The chateau rests on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, near the famous appellation of Saint-Emilion. It shares many of the attributes of Saint-Emilion's soil and climate, but not the prices they fetch. The vineyard make-up is the classic mix for the Right Bank; 80% Merlot, and 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Merlot was the first choice for the Right Bank not because it was superior to Cabernet Sauvignon. It was always thought that Cabernet Sauvignon was the superior varietal.

However, the Right Bank was a bit cooler than the Left, so Merlot dominated. Cabernet was planted in the warmer areas. The result is clear in our selection, showing intense and ripe black fruits with a penetrating mid-palate and an exciting finish. This classic would do honor to a rich cassoulet or a spicy lamb ragout.
