Chateau Gantonnet is another one of those Bordeaux newcomers who have been around for only about 150 years. It is on the Right Bank of Bordeaux in Entre-Deux-Mers. The estate has nearly 200 acres of grapes, 30 acres of which are white.

The chateau was purchased in 1962 by the Ricard Family, a near dynasty in the drinks business with holdings all over the world. They poured thousands of dollars into Chateau Gantonnet to upgrade the vineyards and winery. Today it is a model of efficiency as well as a showplace.

Most of the white wines from Bordeaux come from Entre-Deux-Mers. That is why the percentage of white grapes here is higher than in the rest of Bordeaux, which is under 10%.

The grapes for our selection are 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Muscadelle and 20% Semillon. The higher-than-average amount of Muscadelle is what gives the wine the floral richness it exhibits, with less steeliness and austerity.

The grapes are cold fermented for six to twelve hours on the skins. This is what gives the wine its grip, as the skins extract some tannins. But it is also a tricky procedure, as too much contact could cause the wine to attract some bitterness. A matter of a few hours could make the difference.

Everything worked in perfect harmony here, as the floral makeup is perfectly balanced by the gripping mouthfeel and the all-inclusive tangerine and lime zest.
