We love this wine, made from a small 9-hectare property. Due to the Chateau Barreyre's proximity to the river and the higher clay content of the soil, their wine is awarded the appellation Bordeaux Superieur. It is an amazing option for savvy customers looking for a Bordeaux at a much more affordable price. It is referred to as the "second wine" of Chateau Barreyre, but it is anything but. Chateau Barreyre's production of a second wine allows for a more concentrated and complex "grand vin" main wine. The results are a serious main wine of great character, and a casual drinking easy-going delicious Bordeaux Superieur.

It is made of a blend of more fruit-forward cuvees from younger vines, meant to be enjoyed immediately. With their small property at Chateau Barreyre, they densely plant their vines to lower the grape yield and heighten the quality. They have a green harvest in summer to further lower the yield, and practice traditional methods of vinification in a neutral tank. After it is partially blended with the "grand vin" which includes some wood-aged wine, the wine is bottled and then aged for 18 months.

The chateau was founded by Nicholas Barreyre in 1750 and the designation here is Bordeaux Superieur from grapes grown in the Haut-Medoc area of northern Bordeaux. It is considered the finest of all in Bordeaux. The long, enticing aromas of black fruit and black earth waft in the air with the promise more on the palate. You are not disappointed as those complex flavors penetrate every pore on the palate and begs you to ask for, well you know, seconds.
