Chateau de Fontenille consists of 47,000 grape vines, forming one of the most recognizable vineyards in the world. These vines have thrived in their sunny location since the 13th century. History dates back even further; monks tended to the vines from the nearby Benedictine monastery, Abbaye de la Sauve Majeure. The vineyard is a grand 42 acres, and is dedicated to growing Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris varieties. Unlike most chateaux in Bordeaux, more than a third of the vineyards are planted to white varieties. This is due to the fact that it is located in the white wine capital of France, Entre-deux-Mers.

Since 2017, their vineyard has been certified High Environmental Value, and since 2020 they have been in organic conversion. While most white Bordeaux are a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and small amounts of Muscadelle, Fontenille adds Sauvignon Gris to the mix. Gris means "grey" in French because of the greyish hues of the grape skins. It is quite different from the bright green skins of Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Gris also possess a firmer grip in the mouth to elongate the flavors even more vociferously. Our blend is 40% Sauvignon Blanc and equal amounts of the other three. Another important aspect to the winemaker is that Stephane leaves the fermenting grapes on the skins for up to 24 hours. This further adds to the grip of the finished wine.

Suffice to say that this wine is of tremendous proportions. We seldom get as much presence in the nose, and it is followed by a blast of stone fruit and citrus, which makes its approach out of this world. Try with smoked scallops or Peking duck.
